[tex-live] Use of the updmap-local.cfg file

...so you are saying that for the "local" install to find the right files in the right places,
the "main" directory structure must be replicated in the "local" structure?

Again, I can try this when I get back to my test machine, but I'm not sure here.
Why wouldn't the install database be able to find them anywhere in the local area?
Does it look for different things in different places?
Is there any documentation I can read up on this about?

If so, which directory do the map files have to be located?
It's not obvious from which "main" directory the install picks them from.
There are a bunch of choices I can see that I could choose to replicate locally:

or perhaps even

The original skeleton of the C:\texlive\texmf-local\fonts...
does not contain this structure, and nowhere in the documentation
have I seen this advice with regard to the local map install.

But then on the other hand, I have not spent more than a day or so searching yet...

You must put the map files in .../texmf-local/fonts/maps/(possibly dvips/) or sub-dirctories thereof.

Good Luck,
