I recieved an email from a student who is using the OpenBSD port for
his dissertation, but is having problems with a specific font. I am
not sure if this is a bug or something else. I was hoping someone here
could suggest something.
Please reply-all, so that he recieves the email too.

Sorry, I should have provided more context. Metafont files for the sans
serif blackboard bold font (a.k.a. bbold) are included in both tetex and
texlive in a limited range of sizes: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 17.
My PhD dissertation happens to use sizes 11 and 14. With tetex it used
to work fine, but when I switched to texlive I started getting pages of
incomprehensible errors whenever using the bbfont in any size other than
those listed above.
The problem I experienced can easily be reproduced by running this
I have noticed that running, e.g., "mktexmf bbold15" produces a file
/var/tmp/texfonts/source/public/bbold/bbold15.mf which looks entirely
different from the ones that are part of texlive and distributed in
I am not sure what the right fix is (what I suggested in my first
message probably isn't it) or what to suggest. It seems that the
"sauter" package used to take care of bbold fonts (and others) at
different sizes, and this package might be partially broken in texlive
(I have checked that it is indeed included in texlive/texmf-full).

I sympathize, TeX is a strange beast and it gets ugly when it breaks --
which is frequent. I'll keep looking into this and see if texlive on
other platforms is also affected, and I'll let you know.
