[metapost] aligning boxes

Looks to me like Alan wants the boxes all the same width,
hence his attempt with

   boxjoin(a.w=b.w; a.e=b.e);

(I've left out his other constraint, the one that enforces
the vertical spacing.)  Using Alan's code, I obtain

Looks to me like a bug report is in order!
But maybe I'm missing something?
